Our decision to expand into Canada right now is about defiantly meeting a moment of fraught US politics that threatens our deep friendships and alliances. While divisive rhetoric and reckless tariffs attempt to burn the bridges between our countries, we believe that continuing to share the fruits of our labor across borders is the best antidote to those seeking to divide us.
Under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement of 2018 (USMCA / CUSMA / T-MEC), products that are "originating goods" (entirely sourced from our home countries) get preferential tariff treatment (0% duty). This framework honors the values of working people and the friendships formed shared freedom and prosperity. Because the US recently blocked the 16-year renewal of this agreement, it now faces expiration in 2036.
What that means is we have 10 years to strengthen our bonds under this framework as a bridge over the troubled waters of this moment.
While politicians argue over borders and tariffs, the laws that actually govern this free-trade agreement were written to guarantee that working people can share the fruits (or fruiting bodies) of their labor directly with their neighbors, tariff and duty-free. The treaty recognizes fully mature mushrooms as a product of the land we share, protecting our right to sell them in dietary supplement form freely across the border while better leadership works to protect these values further.
